What It's Like For Girls Living In The Kardashian Beauty Era

I'm not a beauty blogger. Or well, I don't feel like one. I'd never refer to myself as a Guru, and even the term "makeup artist" prefixed with "self taught" makes me feel like a fraud. The why to this is really simple. I'm pale, I'm overweight, my lips and eyes are small, my eyebrows are not instagram worthy.

It finally dawned on me why I've been avoiding beauty related social media recently. I don't at all meet the new standards of beauty. I like to call this the "Kyle Jenner Standard". Your lashes should be full and fluttery, lips should be big and pouty, eyebrows should be painted on to perfection, and skin should be that perfect shade of racially ambiguos.

The fact I'll probbaly never achieve this level of beauty sort of makes me uneasy. Kylie Jenner is 17 years old and literal perfection, ignoring the recent comments people have made about her "appropriating".

At 17 I barely leave the house unless I'm required to (work and family time/errands), spend 60% of my time doing school work, and practically live in nerdy tee shirts and sweatpants. When I was younger, all I really cared about (all most girls my age cared about), was having clear skin, being under a size 12, and being allowed to wear makeup to cover my freckles. So much has changed. The outlandish "Todlers and Tiaras" makeup obsessed little girls are suddenly really acting like that. I spoke to a couple makeup artists and a couple girls/young women about what they thought of the current beauty standard and this is what they had to say. (Warning, this is going to be a long but interesting post, it's worth the read.)

How do you feel about makeup?

"I love makeup personally. I've never felt pressured my social media to wear it, although in 7th grade I felt the pressure from peers to be "prettier" so that's when I started to learn how to wear makeup properly. " - Megan, 16
"I love makeup. I don't wear it everyday or spend a whole lot of time or money on it, but I think in general it's pretty great." - Amy, 18
"Well, I don't wear makeup very often. Mostly because it's a pain to take off and I'm lazy. However, I do think makeup is great! At times I think it's good to have a break from it to keep yourselves from becoming dependent on it to feel beautiful. Other than that I think it's a great way to accent the beauty that is already there without makeup." - Desiray, 20

Have you ever tried to over draw your lips?

"No, even though I have next to no upper lip. It would look too obvious and strange if I tried to fake it." - Kelsey, 23

"Yes I do currently overdraw my lips." - Megan

Have you ever worn fake eyelashes?

"I've worn fake eyelashes for dance competitions and performances and then occasions like prom and homecoming, but that's it." - Megan

"Yes. Again with love hate. I like the way they make my eyes pop but overall I wouldn't use them daily. To me it's not worth it especially when you can bold your lashes with some vaseline and mascara. " - Heidi, 24

"Nope." - Amy

Have you ever tried to contour?

"Once, I think." - Amy

"I tried to contour like once. It looked really unnatural and just wasn't for me. I will occasionally highlight my face in some areas, but when it comes to contouring I'm lost." - Hope, 18

"I do currently contour my face as part of my everyday face. " - Megan

Have you ever wanted plastic surgery?

"I am getting plastic surgery but for personal reasons not for face like Botox or permanent makeup." - Alexis, 17

"Yes, my nose is one thing I've always been self conscious about especially when it's the small nose that is considered  most attractive" - Heidi

How do you feel when you can’t follow a particular beauty trend (overdrawing/contouring/filled in eyebrows)?

"Well, I don't feel like I can't follow them. I probably could if I practiced and such, but I choose not to do those things. I could if i wanted to, I just don't want to. " - Amy

"Trying to keep up with trends or following them has honestly never appealed to me because then you’d be the same as everyone else. Trends are awesome when it's something funky and different but it's not for everyone but everyone wants to be like everyone so it takes the fun out of the look. To be honest not every trend applies to everyone. If you find something that doesn't quite fit you or your tastes I don't think you should follow it just because everyone else does. Or you can adjust it and make it your own. " - Heidi

"I guess it makes me feel bad when I can't follow a certain trend, but it's more frustration than anything at the fact that I wasn't able to figure something out. I have a basic mastery over makeup, and I don't feel like I absolutely need to follow the next trend. I like how I do things now enough that I don't dwell on it when I can't produce a certain look." - Hope

"A trend’s a trend; it will die down eventually. Not ever trend is suited for everyone." - Kelsey

Have you ever been made fun of (seriously) because you didn’t wear makeup/makeup was too natural?

"I wasn’t so much made fun of, but I did often hear “You’d look a lot better if you wore_____”." - Kelsey

"I've never been made fun of for a lack of makeup but I do feel insecure without it." - Megan

"No. I almost always wear makeup, and when I don't, no one seems to care. Actually what I see most in terms of makeup criticism, is girls being picked on for wearing too much makeup, or not doing something correctly (using the wrong color foundation, way overdrawn eyeliner, too strong eye shadow, etc.)." - Hope

"Yes. As I said before in highschool I opted out of make up entirely and just wore whatever, but when I was made fun of wasn't in high school. It was actually in elementary school in 6th grade. I had no need for makeup or girly things but a group of girls actually bullied me because I was into superheros and video games rather than tabloid magazines that dictated what make up /women/ should wear. "
Do you think the Kardashian/Jenner family should be beauty icons? Why or why not?
"I really don't like their look honestly. It's very dramatic and hardly any of what they look like now is their real appearance. And for another not a single picture I've seen do they have a genuine smiles and I don't watch the show so I don't know honestly." -Heidi

How has Social Media/Kardashian/Jenner beauty standards affected you? In a negative or positive way? Explain.

" Although the they do makeup/dress really well within a certain kind of aesthetic, I don't particularity think they should be icons for anything. That lifestyle is so toxic. We should be celebrating people who do good in the world, not the drama in the lives of celebrities. I find the whole obsession shallow. " - Hope

"No, simply because their beauty is artificial. We look at celebrities as these perfect beings when in reality their looks are usually an illusion thanks to Photoshop, surgery and makeup. " - Kelsey

"Honestly their fame has affected my beauty routine. Once Kylie entered the limelight my makeup routine changed completely. I find myself basically trying to imitate her face, so I would call it a negative effect." - Megan

"It hasn’t. I wish I had a better reason. I worked hard to be happy with myself without makeup, and to view makeup as an addition and not a replacement. I can imagine that without their looks, the Kardashians would be very empty people. Social Media doesn’t define you; if you love the way you look without it- great! If you like to wear heavier makeup- great too!" - Kelsey

Has social media ever made you feel like you HAD to wear makeup?

"It certainly has made make up more appealing because you see these beautiful darlings with fantastic eyeliner and perfect pouty lips. Even for geeks we secretly want to look like our sexy heroines with red lips and thick lashes so, indeed. In any social media genre make up and having a certain look is played to its receiving masses that this is what a girl or woman should look like and it's a pressure for all social mediums." - Heidi
" I've never really felt like I /had/ to wear makeup, because I know plenty of girls who don't. Social media does push/ inspire me to up my makeup game, and maybe makes me feel bad about how I look overall, but when it comes to makeup it's more of an inspiration than making me feel as though I absolutely MUST wear makeup. I do really like the trend where celebrities/ really good makeup people post no makeup pictures of themselves because it reminds me that the look isn't natural,, and also reminds me of how wonderful people can be at makeup (again, inspiration)." - Hope
"Not really. I'm 24 now, and in high school I definitely went through the phase of feeling like there was alot of pressure or obligation to wear it, but I don't feel that came from social media for me." - Anonymous

*********************************************

Honestly, talking to all these women seriously opened my eyes. Some felt incredibly strongly about makeup, beauty, and the Kardashians. While others simply were too busy living their lives. Both Heidi and Kelsey work as makeup artists (Heidi in beauty, Kelsey in SFX). They both seemed to have a much clearer head particularly regarding trends. The youngest of the group, Megan, seemed the most effected by the change in standards. What do you think? Are the Kardashian/Jenners doing more bad than good? Should girls be trying to emulate what surgery and genetics created rather than learning how to enhance their own features?

Scentbird Perfume Subscription Box

So I have a subtle obsession with good smelling stuff. I love candles, lotions, perfumes, bath bombs, body sprays... All of it. And I have a pretty excessive collection. So I've decided I'm really just going to start buying roller balls rather than the full size, since I'm going away to college next year and the rooms at my first choice school are smaller than the average dorm.

This is where Scentbird comes in. I first saw this on one of Jessica Braun's subscription box reviews and have been lusting after it for a good six months now. The idea is that it's 15 dollars a month, and you get a "one month" supply of a perfume of your choice. It's an 8ml bottle which is about 120 sprays. When signing up you take a quiz that helps them know what kind of fragrances you like. They ask questions about where your happy place is, what drinks you like, etc.

I was lucky enough to receive my subscription for free in exchange for an honest review. And I have a few things that I didn't really like but mostly things that I LOVED.

Scentbird sent me my little vial in a bubble mailer. I'm unsure as to whether or not this is the normal method of delivery but honestly I'm not happy with it. The case seemed pretty sturdy, but I'm afraid that some post offices aren't as careful with small packages and I can't imagine how upset someone would be if they received a busted bottle. This is especially an issue with month boxes, as it only ships in the case the FIRST month.

My other (admittedly petty) complaint is that you have to spray the sample in order to smell it. I wish they sent a little scratch and sniff or something so I could sample the scent without having to waste 1 of the 120 sprays. Even if something has been matched to you, you could still not like it. Some scents that Scentbird recommended to me give me headaches as I've had previous experience with them. I wish there was a way to test if the perfume I chose had an adverse effect on me without having to commit to a scent I hate all day or wasting a scent I love with a couple test sprays.

Overall, I think I really like this concept and the execution of it is quite nice as well :)

Back to Blogging

It has been a ridiculous amount of time since I last posted any kind of content. My post about making this a more all inclusive type of blog went over well and then bam, I poofed! Well no more!

So I guess I will use this as a sort of "whats to come".

Makeup wise, there isn't much for me to do. Tutorials, maybe, but I lack the equipment and talent to crank those out as often as I know some would like. DEFINITELY more reviews. I really didn't realize how far I had gotten from doing those basic kind of stuff until I received a request for more, and realized I really hadn't done any except for in very brief roundup posts.

As far as the new subjects I plan on bringing into my blog... Well, I go away for college in a year, and even if it's only a year, I plan on making my room picture perfect in the next couple of months. Already almost all of my furniture has been rearranged and replaced... Now all I need is the proper decorations.

Speaking of aesthetic, if you're not following me on tumblr you can do that here (or click the picture above).

You know you can expect a million more funny stories/true facts told in gif list form, because honestly those are my favorite posts to do.

Readers, I am also looking at getting fit. You see... this thing happens when you are an internet obsessed teenager where you pin all about fitness and healthy recipes but still spend a solid 6 hours in front of the computer eating two packs of ramen and a donut. Shameless social media plug, follow me on Pinterest. I'm currently training for the Color Run in September and will be posting about that. Meaing be prepared for the millions of complaints about shin splints.

Honestly, there is't much else to discuss that I don't want to cover in another post... So, ya know. See you then.

Covergirl Full Lash Blast Review of Fame

Covergirl Full Lash Bloom Mascara
Covergirl
$7.99
Purchase here/Available for purchase anywhere Covergirl makeup is sold

Category: Drugstore

Intended for: Eyes

Texture: Not too watery, but not clumpy either. Really good for coating individual lashes.

Pigmentation: It’s pretty difficult to judge the pigmentation of a mascara. It is properly black, though I don’t know if it would very color wise on someone who doesn't already have black eyelashes.

Dupe For: N/A

Recommended For: Anyone looking for eyelashes that don’t crunch every time you blink

Likes: The brush is rubberized, which I feel like is best for separating and volumizing, the formula doesn't have any smell, can be layered for a more dramatic effect

Dislikes: It almost feels like the mascara never truly dries on your lashes

Versatility: This can be worn for any occasion, though it’s not waterproof, it does seem to be water resistant

Ease of Application: I love ever thing about the way this goes on, the brush is perfect, the formula is perfect. It’s mascara made easy. However, be careful when doing multiple coats because I did manage to stab my eye a couple times which I had never done before. It’s probably just user error

A closer look at the brush and bottle out of the packaging

In Conclusion: I’m going to be purchasing this when I run out. I love the Covergirl LashBlast Volume, and this is basically that but a much easier application and removal. When I first saw the commercials for this I couldn’t think of a reason to have my eyelashes be soft. The only person touching them is me, and I don’t ever care so long as they look good. However the “softness” factor is really helpful in a couple different ways. It’s easy to layer with this formula, because the lashes never get crunchy, so you can add a second coat of this or another mascara. When removing the mascara, feel like I pull out fewer eyelashes trying to get it off. With most mascaras, it doesn’t matter what kind of remover I use, I always lose a few lashes along the way, but with this the mascara comes off easily and doesn’t smear around my face too much.

31 Stars to Thirty One!

Time for my half sponsored, totally unbiased review of two new bags I got. Both are Thirty One bags (sort of). One I am using as my nail stuff organizer, and the other is one of their new, higher end bags from the Jewel that I am using as my on the go makeup bag.

*****************************************************************************************************************************************

Let’s start with the nail organizer. It holds everything nicely and keeps it organized, and I can definitely see it being used to organize makeup items as well

The Pros:
  • Small
  • Portable
  • Comes in many patterns
  • Lots of pockets!

The Cons:
  • No "sturdy" structure
  • No pockets on the inside
  • Pockets on the outside are only on one side

*****************************************************************************************************************************************

Now the makeup bag. I just got this tonight, I paid a reduce rate to get this bag so I have no idea how much it retails for. If there’s a high demand I could definitely investigate that further.

The Pros:
  • Gorgeous pattern
  • Gorgeous fabric
  • Great size
  • Sturdy

The Cons:
  • Not really washable
  • The inside looks like it will stain easily

*****************************************************************************************************************************************

Another quick little note, Thirty One is having a flash sale! They just merged with their sister company, Jewel (which is what my makeup bag came from), and all of those bags are going to be available in January, but before that they’re looking to get rid of some of their old stock.

The sale will be going on from now until December 22nd. You can shop online here or just clink the picture below.

Disclaimer: I did receive stuff in exchange for this post, however my opinion on the products is completely unbiased.

Gbubbles Honey Soap Reviews

This week's review is going to be very short. I started the first of my many Gbubbles soap reviews with what I thought was going to be an amazing combination for my skin. For my face soap I used Greta's Virginia Honey bar soap, as honey is sort of the known as the cure all for skin. It's antibacterial, heals, and moisturizes your skin. Unless you're me (or one of the many people with sensitivities to pollen). Both the Honey and Oatmeal, Milk, and Honey soaps broke me out pretty badly. However, that's nothing against the quality of the soap. What doesn't work for me may work for you. Oatmeal, Milk, and Honey is one of Gbubbles most popular soaps, and for good reasons. Aside from the fact I reacted poorly to it, the process of using it was pleasant. It's a soft, moisturizing soap with oats in it as an exfoliant. All in all I would rate this soap a 2/5 for me, but as a soap in general I'd rate it a 4/5 (the Oatmeal, Milk, and Honey wasn't the easiest to use on a bath poof).

Disclaimer: In exchange for this review I've been given the small sample sized soaps that you see in the picture. This in no way affects my opinion of the product being reviewed.

5 Reasons Why I Love the Glamglow Supermud Mask

5. It lives up to the hype!

I’ve been hoarding samples of the Glamglow Supermud mask for this reasons. Every time I go into Sephora with someone I find myself grabbing a sample of it to show them the amazing effects of the product, and normally end up with enough to do my face as well as theirs, plus some extra for spot treatments. Basically, this stuff is magic. It doesn’t dry out my already insanely dry skin, nor do I break out the next day. In fact in the three times I’ve been able to use it in the past week (which is how often the Glamglow websites “prescribes” it), it has changed the texture of my skin dramatically. My pores are smaller, my skin doesn’t feel like sandpaper to the touch, and my blackheads are either improving or are gone altogether in some places.

4. It’s actually a great value.

The price tag on this tiny jar is impressive. It’s a whopping 69 dollars for 1.2 fl. Oz. of product. However, when applied with a clean foundation brush, I can make one tiny sample size last me a whole week (using it 3 times a week per the website’s suggestion).  Considering the fact that some weeks I may use it less or not at all, and that I’ll spend more money buying different products trying to find something that works as well, 69 dollars isn’t a bad price for a jar I’m estimating could last me 6-12 months.

3. Watching the gunk being removed from your pores is grossly addicting.

I’ve got to admit what initially drew me to try the product was a picture I saw on Pinterest of this product drawing the oils out of the pores on a person’s nose. It was genuinely disturbing, so of course I had to have it. Without a doubt, it’s incredibly satisfying being able to see what it’s doing. Admittedly, it doesn’t rid your face of blackheads and blemishes in one use, but there is an improvement.

2. The drying time is next to nothing.

From the second you start spreading the mask onto your skin it starts drying. The instructions say you can leave it for 5, 10, or 20 minutes. I always try to leave it on for the 20 but I don’t think I’ve ever made it past 15. It doesn’t hurt but I’m not a fan of the tight feeling masks create when they’re dry. I integrated this into my beauty routine today while getting ready for Thanksgiving, and it didn’t add more than five minutes to it. Not only does it dry quickly but it rinses off easily with warm water and the help of a rag for the little nooks and crannies of your face (I’m looking at you, nose crease).

1. There aren’t a crazy amount of unnatural products in it.

This is massively important to me recently. I noticed that the more natural the product I use on my face, the better it feels. I’ll be doing a whole separate post about my skin care routine eventually, but for now let’s just talk about what this mask doesn’t have. Glamglow says their supermud mask does not contain:

  • Sulfates
  • Synthetic Dyes
  • Petrochemicals
  • Phthalates
  • GMOs
  • Triclosan

Guess what? All of those ingredients are not that good for you.

In conclusion, get the mask, but definitely make sure you try it out at least twice before investing that much money in it. While the mask works for me, it’s probably not going to work for everybody.

Disclaimer: I was not given anything for this post, I'm just very enthusiastic about the product!

Younique Thoughts (Part 1.5)

Today’s quick post is something I’ve been thinking about writing since the Younique party two weeks ago. This isn’t my part 2 post on the subject, but it’s about the Moonstrucks 3D Fiber Lashes that I got to try that day. We’ll call this Younique Thoughts (1.5). More specifically, it’s my first impression and why I chose not to purchase the product that the company seems to be most famous for.

That is 1 coat of the 3D Lashes
Don't worry Younique reps who read my blog, this is not a review of shame! Personally, every time I see people with naturally long eyelashes wearing this mascara, they always seem clumpy and spidery to me. It's likely that they're applying it the way someone who REALLY needs the fuller lash look would and are getting something that isn't soft or pretty (in my opinion), so for all you girls out there with long, full lashes, definitely take it easy on the fibers. The product is good, it's waterproof, and looked wonderful on many of the other women at the party, this is just a case of personal preferences, as well as proving that while a product may be wonderful, it's not always for everyone! Some of you girls may love the way that this looks, and if you do I say go for it! It's a great product that definitely lives up to the hype. In the several hours that I wore it, it did not flake, smear, or run when I started to tear up (no I wasn't crying, I was yawning)! So my verdict on the 3D lashes are if you really need the extra boost, or feel like you need it. It's definitely worth the money. However if you already have long full lashes you may be better off investing the money in another product that would benefit your more in the long run.

Blog Update!

Hello fellow beauty fanatics (AKA friends and family I’ve made read this blog)! I haven’t done much in the past week to create a cohesive blog post with one specific theme, so I figured I’d make this a sort of Update. I haven’t been posting this week because, as I’m sure you’ve noticed, I’ve been working really hard on making my blog look more visually appealing. When I say working hard, I mean I had to watch a million and one tutorials on how to do certain types of coding! See those fancy social media buttons to the right of the page that have replaced the cheesy “Like me! Follow me! Love me!” buttons that the websites provide? Yeah, those took me a good 3 hours to figure out how to do properly. Thank god for Google and Youtube! After going through and reading other popular beauty blogs I realized there was definitely something… off about my aesthetic. I’ve probably said it before but I’ll say it again now, if you clicked on it, it would feel like you stumbled on an old Myspace page… awkward. That being said it will probably change some more over the next few weeks, but nothing as drastic as the current update.

My blog as of this post!

In post related news, I’ve got some really exciting ideas, plus a few suggestions/requests. I did start to do a big post on eyeliner and how NOT to resemble a panda while wearing it, however as great as the iPhone 4 is, it is not ideal for filming tutorials or shooting pictorials. If people ask very nicely I might consider posting a few of the fails, just for a laugh. My Younique makeup came in this week, so once I have used those products for a good amount of time I will definitely write Younique Thoughts (Part 2). Part 1 can be found here.

My next proper product review will be one in a rather large series. Greta from Gbubbles soap (the soap I briefly mentioned in my makeup brush tutorial) has given me a sample of every soap she is currently selling in person at gun shows, and I will be reviewing all of them! Those will probably be catalogued on a static page, as there are so many of them. Because there are so many I will not be writing a post for each one individually, though there will be one review a week of 1-2 of them per week. This week’s will be on her Oatmeal, Milk, & Honey and her Virginia Honey bars (her full list of scents can be found here). Keep a look out for that on either Saturday or Sunday of this week.

I'm currently in possession of all of those small bars you see.

Finishing up, I’m considering keeping a tab of every beauty product I own as well as swatches for them all. Also the thoughts are bouncing around my head for a Twitter, but with everything else I have that’s definitely something I’m going to wait until I have a slightly more establishes schedule/abundance of posts. Until then, I’m going to post some of the looks I haven’t posted before below, with details of the products I used.

Makeup Brush Cleaning Tutorial

Look how dirty they've gotten!
Today's post will be on how to clean your makeup brushes. the majority of my brushes get completely demolished. Somehow, I manage to use almost every brush in my 24 piece kit in a week. This amount of usage can create some very nasty brushes. A lot of makeup brands sell a brush cleaner made specifically for this purpose, and there are a plethora of different DIY recipes. I don't use any of these, rather, I use a bar of soap (mine is a home made glycerin base I buy from a woman named Greta I met while working gun shows) and some water to restore the soft clean status of my brushes at the end of a week.  Read below for a fairly basic step by step and (provided I can get it to work) a video showing the simple process.

Gbubbles soap in Grandfather's Pipe
My poor babies

Must Haves
-Bar of soap (not anti bacterial)
-Dirty brushes
-Water

How To

Wet your brush. Don't squeeze off excess water.

Soap it up. Use the water in the brush to scrub and clean the bristles.
Swirl it around until the brush is soapy.
Rinse your brush. Let your fingers work through the bristles to make sure it gets nice and clean.
Once clean squeeze it gently and reshape the brush.

Important note: Always let brushes dry vertically with the brushes pointed downward!!!

Elf Studio Lipstain Review

Review of Fame (with a little bit of shame)
Studio Lip Stain in Lucky Lady
Elf
$3.00

Category: Affordable

Intended for: Lips

Texture: Matte comes with a gloss for glossy look

Pigmentation: Average

Dupe For: Comparable to Limecrime Velvetines (which is a plus because you don’t have to pay 20 dollars to the shady company)

Recommended For: Anyone (with perfectly symmetrical lips that is)

Likes: Matte finish, ease of application

Dislikes: Couldn’t use gloss because applicator broke off in tube, not opaque enough to use if you have to ‘shape’ your lips

Versatility: Can be worn for any occasion in many different shades, can be worn all day while eating, drinking, etc. without having to reapply

Ease of Application: Very simple to apply but as previously mentioned, it’s not opaque enough to reshape your lips with the stain

In Conclusion: I like this product and for three dollars, the bads are absolutely worth it. It was a bit of a letdown that the gloss is now unusable, but I have other glosses I can put on over it. I’ve ordered this same product in another color and we will see if I’m more thoroughly pleased with that one.
